Beginning when we are girls, most of us are taught to deflect praise. We apologize for our accomplishments. We try to level the field with our family and friends by downplaying our brilliance. We settle for the passenger's seat when we long to drive. That's why so many of us have been willing to hide our light as adults. Instead of being filled with all the passion and purpose that enable us to offer our best to the world, we empty ourselves in an effort to silence our critics.


I've come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as a fingerprint-and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you.

When I had the honor of being included in the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in 2019, I sat for a painting with four objects on a shelf behind me in the composition: a photo of my parents; a photo of Raj, Preetha, and Tara; a Yale SOM baseball cap; and a PepsiCo annual report with the words "Performance with Purpose" on the cover.


I've drank all the Kool-Aid and am completely convinced that Walmart should be here for the next generation of retail, because we're so wired to fulfill our purpose of helping people save money and live better.


So, what I think, sometimes a pure tech company can underestimate is the importance of culture, the importance of a purpose.


So I care what people think, and I like people, and I like employing people and I like creating opportunity for people so I'm pro-people and I want the technology to help us serve people. Of course, we want machines to do what machines are best at, you must and you want to, and at the same time, we should consider the importance of being purpose-driven.


If we were with a bunch of Walmart associates right now, we could say, 'The only thing that's constant in our company other than our purpose and values is..,' and they would respond, 'Change.'"


The truth is we have a consistent purpose that we got from our founder, some values that we share - those are persistent, too. It's not just change. But that's the thing that people underestimate about Walmart right now, that it has an ability to change.
