There is only one duty, only one safe course, and that is to try to be right and not to fear to do or say what you believe to be right.

We can gain no lasting peace if we approach it with suspicion and mistrust or with fear. We can gain it only if we proceed with the understanding, the confidence, and the courage which flow from conviction.

The qualities of a great man are vision, integrity, courage, understanding, the power of articulation, and profundity of character.

The satisfaction arising from the indulgent opinion entertained by the American People of my conduct, will, I trust, be some security for preventing me from doing any thing, which might justly incur the forfeiture of that opinion. And the consideration that human happiness and moral duty are inseparably connected, will always continue to prompt me to promote the progress of the former, by inculcating the practice of the latter.

Have no fear of the future. Let us go forward into its mysteries, tear away the veils which hide it from our eyes, and move onwards with confidence and courage.

People who are not prepared to do unpopular things and defy the clamor of the multitude are not fit to be ministers in time of difficulty.
