In Africa there is a concept known as 'ubuntu' - the profound sense that we are human only through the humanity of others; that if we are to accomplish anything in this world it will in equal measure be due to the work and achievement of others.

They'd imprisoned me for so long. I was abused. I didn't get to see my children grow up. I lost my marriage and the best years of my life. I was angry. And I was afraid, because I had not been free in so long. But as I got closer to the car that would take me away, I realized that when I went through that gate, if I still hated them, they would still have me. I wanted to be free. And so I let it go.

We fought injustice wherever we found it, no matter how large, or how small, and we fought injustice to preserve our own humanity.

Even behind prison walls I can see the heavy clouds and the blue sky over the horizon.

To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity.

To overthrow oppression has been sanctioned by humanity and is the highest aspiration.
