Society is impossible without inequality, inequality intolerable without a code of morality, and a code of morality unacceptable without religion.

Myth, the necessary prerequisite of any religion, is already paralyzed everywhere, and even in this domain the optimistic spirit, which we have just designated as the germ of destruction in our society, has attained the mastery.

Of all the animosities which have existed among mankind, those which are caused by difference of sentiments in religion appear to be the most inveterate and distressing, and ought most to be deprecated. It would at least have reconciled Christians of every denomination so far that we should never again see the religious disputes carried to such a pitch as to endanger the peace of society.

Some people think that religion is not essential to society. I do not hold this view. I consider the foundation of religion to be essential to the life and practices of a society.

Hinduism is not interested in the common man. Hinduism is not interested in Society as a whole. The centre of its interest lies in a classand its philosophy is concerned in sustaining and supporting the rights of that class.

In my opinion, it is only when Hindu society becomes a casteless society that it can hope to have strength enough to defend itself. Without suchinternal strength, swaraj for Hindus may turn out to be only a step towards slavery.
