My mom's one of 13 siblings, and they all got six kids, and till I was 13 everybody was in Compton.

I was raised in a super-sheltered atmosphere where we didn't watch anything besides Trinity Broadcasting Network - which was called TBN - or the Fox News channel.

I was an only child, and Mother was always right with me all my life. I used to get very angry at her when I was growing up-it's a natural thing.

My mother had a rule, obviously, that I couldn't go across the street by myself, but I had to find a way of doing it.

That background helped me a lot, because it taught me to fend for myself from a very early age, and to be responsible. It was an upheaval of an upbringing, which seems to have worked, I guess.
