But all history has taught us the grim lesson that no nation has ever been successful in avoiding the terrors of war by refusing to defend its rights - by attempting to placate aggression.

Unless a nation's life faces peril, war is murder.

Everyone can see how communism rots the soul of a nation. How it makes it abject in peace and proves it abominable in war.

So long as war exists on earth there will be some danger that even the Nation which most ardently desires peace may be drawn into war.

We speak here of the challenge of the dichotomies of war and peace, violence and non-violence, racism and human dignity, oppression and repression and liberty and human rights, poverty and freedom from want.

I still believe that one day mankind will bow before the altars of God and be crowned triumphant over war and bloodshed, and nonviolent redemptive good will proclaim the rule of the land.
