There is a danger that threatens everyone in the church, all of us. The danger of worldliness. It leads us to vanity, arrogance and pride.

A man given to pride is usually proud of the wrong thing.

Through your rags I see your vanity.

The pride connected with knowing and sensing lies like a blinding fog over the eyes and senses of men, thus deceiving them concerning the value of existence.

Memory says, 'I did that.' Pride replies, 'I could not have done that.' Eventually, memory yields.

The strongest knowledge (that of the total freedom of the human will) is nonetheless the poorest in successes: for it always has the strongest opponent, human vanity.
