He who is punished is never he who performed the deed. He is always the scapegoat.

The criminal is quite frequently not equal to his deed: he belittles and slanders it.

Faith is the mightiest force that man has at his command. It impels human beings to greatness in thought and word and deed.

It is an overflowing love, which seeks nothing in return. Theologians would say that it is the love of God operating in the human heart. And when one rises to love on this level, he is able to love the person who does the evil deed, while hating the deed that the person does.

Certainly one can never forget, if that means erasing totally for his mind. But when we forgive, we forget in the sense that the evil deed is no longer a mental block impeding a new relationship.

Every word and deed must contribute to an understanding with the enemy and release those vast reservoirs of goodwill which have been blocked by impenetrable walls of hate.
