Undeserved praise causes more pangs of conscience later than undeserved blame, but probably only for this reason, that our power of judgment are more completely exposed by being over praised than by being unjustly underestimated.

We praise or blame as one or the other affords more opportunity for exhibiting our power of judgement.

What can everyone do? Praise and blame. This is human virtue, this is human madness.

Some are made modest by great praise, others insolent.

For as long as they praise you, never forget that it is not yet your own path that you walk, but another person's.

Nobody is unhappy when they are praised, even if they know they don't deserve it and even if they don't believe it. The only unhappy people about praise is when that praise is going too much toward somebody else. But everybody likes to be praised because of this real drum major instinct.
