Honesty is the best policy. If I lose mine honor, I lose myself.

The American people, since 1932, continue to insist on two requisites of private enterprise, and the relationship of Government to it. The first is complete honesty...and the second is sincere respect.

We can gain no lasting peace if we approach it with suspicion and mistrust or with fear. We can gain it only if we proceed with the understanding, the confidence, and the courage which flow from conviction.

Where is the man to be found who wishes to remain indebted for the defense of his own person and property to the exertions, the bravery, and the blood of others, without making one generous effort to repay the debt of honor and gratitude?

In order to be a leader a man must have followers. And to have followers, a man must have their confidence.

Realizing that common sense and common decency alike dictate the futility of appeasement, we shall never try to placate an aggressor by the false and wicked bargain of trading honor for security.
