Farming looks mighty easy when your plough is a pencil, and you're a thousand miles from the corn field.

No other human occupation opens so wide a field for the profitable and agreeable combination of labor with cultivated thought, as agriculture.

The proper role of government, however, is that of partner with the farmer - never his master. By every possible means we must develop and promote that partnership - to the end that agriculture may continue to be a sound, enduring foundation for our economy and that farm living may be a profitable and satisfying experience.

The atomic energy agency could be made responsible for the impounding, storage and protection of the contributed fissionable and other materials... to devise methods whereby this fissionable material would be allocated to serve the peaceful pursuits of mankind. Experts would be mobilized to apply atomic energy to the needs of agriculture, medicine and... provide abundant electrical energy in the power-starved areas of the world.

Ere long the most valuable of all arts will be the art of deriving a comfortable subsistence from the smallest area of soil.

I hope, some day or another, we shall become a storehouse and granary for the world.
