The man who in view of gain thinks of righteousness; who in the view of danger is prepared to give up his life; and who does not forget an old agreement however far back it extends - such a man may be reckoned a complete man.

Fine words and an insinuating appearance are seldom associated with true virtue.

The gentleman calls attention to the good points in others; he does not call attention to their defects. The small man does just the reverse of this.

The nobler sort of man emphasizes the good qualities in others, and does not accentuate the bad. The inferior does.

Leaving virtue without proper cultivation; not thoroughly discussing what is learned; not being able to move towards righteousness of which a knowledge is gained; and not being able to change what is not good: - these are the things which occasion me solicitude.

A good moral character is the first essential. It is highly important not only to be learned but to be virtuous.
