Charity puts and end to poverty; righteous conduct to misery; discretion to ignorance; and scrutiny to fear.

What vice could be worse than covetousness? What is more sinful than slander? For one who is truthful, what need is there for austerity? For one who has a clean heart, what is the need for pilgrimage?.

At fifteen my heart was set on learning; at thirty I stood firm; at forty I had no more doubts; at fifty I knew the will of heaven; at sixty my ear was obedient; at seventy I could follow my heart's desire without overstepping the boundaries of what was right.

Learning and wisdom are superfluities, the surface glitter merely, but it is the heart that is the seat of all power.
