It's a struggle for every young Black man. You know how it is, only God can judge us.

In my country we go to prison first and then become President.

Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline.

I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality.

We must never become bitter nor should we succumb to the temptation of using violence in the struggle, for if this happens, unborn generations will be the recipients of a long and desolate night of bitterness and our chief legacy to the future will be an endless reign of meaningless chaos.

I used to get really defensive about the word 'depressed' back in the day because my mum was clinically ill - fucking hell, mate, if you'd seen depression, you'd know it. And I feel like that a bit about trauma - I don't want to gatekeep trauma, but ... I was really traumatised.
